HISTORY
OF THE GREENVILLE FOOTBALL WEB SITE
By Art Williams / ACW Productions
|
In the summer of 1998, I contacted Head Coach Bob Stone
to see if he would mind if I created a web site for the
Trojans. At our first meeting, I described to Coach
Stone what the web site would include. When I finished,
he looked at me and asked what a web site was. Thus the
web site had its start. |
|
The goal for the web site was to provide fans,
especially those out of the area, a means to follow the
Trojans on the internet by providing scores, statistics,
photos and other information. There were many
challenges getting information, stats and photos on the
site in a timely fashion. Many hours were spent on that
process. |
|
At the start, Paul Miller, Greenville Athletic Director
at the time, who was also the Northwest Conference
commissioner provided Trojans records from the past and
individual/team statistics from the NW Conference. Kent
Bell (currently Pastor at Bethel Life Church), a
radio announcer who covered the Trojans on a local
station provided game statistics. I took photos of the
players, coaches, trainers, managers, cheerleaders,
fans, and the band at halftime. Team and individual
photos were taken on Media Day. |
|
The quality of the site improved over time with the help
of Nate Leary of Leary's Studio who started to allow me
to use his team photos and Whendy Kozminski, the Record
Argus Sports Director at the time, who started to supply
me with game stats the night of the game by email. It
would be with Whendy's help that the site would
eventually reach its top level of interest. |
|
As the site developed, a live online Pre-Season & Post
Season chat with Coach Stone was added to the site.
Hosting the chats was one of the highlights for me
operating the site, they were a lot of fun. At its peak,
an online chat night would go something like this: I
would pick up a pizza donated by Pizza Hut. Coach Stone
would show up, occasionally accompanied by his
grandchildren. His son, Bob, his typist, would arrive
shortly after. (Note: I still haven't seen anybody type
as fast as him yet). Then, Whendy, the Record Argus
Sports Director, would come and interview Coach Stone as
the chat went on. At the end of the chat a photo for
the paper would be taken with Coach Stone at the
computer with mouse in hand. |
|
Other developments through the years that took the site
to its highest level included; a Guestbook; a Trojan
Dream Team section which was compiled by Coach Stone,
Coach Ed Snyder and others; a Trojan Trivia section
provided by Coach Stone's son Bob; Stats & Game stories
by Whendy; JV game scores and notes provided by Coaches
Terry Cooper, Mark Hayes and Brian Tokar; a strongest
Trojan section and action game photos by Dave Rose.
